SC Solicits Clarification from Mysore Lab on Maggi Batches
After FSSAI filed a plea in the Supreme Court against the sales of Maggi noodles, the SC has asked for the clarification from the government laboratory in Mysore to further check whether the test reports relating to lead and glutamic acid (MSG) in the product are within permissible limits according to the law.
After examining the two communications received from the Mysore laboratory, the apex court has passed the order. While, the manufacture of Maggi claimed that the quantity of lead was within the permissible limit authorized under the Food Safety Act. Justice NV Ramana stated,
”We have perused the test reports. We would like Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore to apprise this court on two aspects, whether the test report relating to lead and glutamic acid are within the permissible parameters and to clarify that those are within parameters prescribed under the Food Safety Act”.
Now, more testing will be done in Mysore of the Maggi samples for clarification relating to glutamic acid. Further commented on this, the bench said, “For the additional samples the court may communicate with the joint registrar, National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC), who was appointed as local commissioner. He shall collect the samples from FSSAI
“For the additional samples the court may communicate with the joint registrar, National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC), who was appointed as local commissioner. He shall collect the samples from FSSAI godown in Lucknow”.
Last year on 13th August, the Bombay High Court lifted the ban on nine variants of the fast food and sought the company to go for fresh tests.
